Respect Initiative

The GAA Respect Initiative has been developed in order to ensure that Gaelic games are promoted in a positive manner and within an environment which is conducive to ensuring that all participants achieve their full potential. This underlying approach will help to underpin the values of the association and to consolidate the three core principles which best promote these i.e. player centered, family orientated and community based.

“Give Respect Get Respect Signage”

Academies / Schools of Excellence / Development Squads 2012

The way forward for Development Squads in Football and Hurling was discussed at a Coaching & Games Committee meeting on 15th Feb 2012. The meeting was chaired by Deirdre Donnelly and attended by Ferghal O’Connor, Benny McManus, Brian Treacy, Ciaran Carey and the GDM.

It was strongly recommended that there should be a change towards working with the top 25 players in each age-group – players leaving P. 7/U12 through U13, U14, U15 and U16. The U17 Squad would be integrated with the County Minors. This was put to a full Youth Board meeting on the 20th February 2012 where there was broad agreement for the plans.

Fermanagh Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps 2012

There were 15 Kellogg’s Cúl Camps in Fermanagh in July and August 2012 – 13 Football/Hurling and 2 designated Hurling camps.

The numbers were down overall and we have examined why this might have been in a review with the co-ordinators. I’m convinced this is not the only criteria for successful Camps

Recommendations for next year will be circulated shortly.

Ulster Council U16 Hurling Blitz. Saturday 12th May 2012

Fermanagh played their Monaghan counterparts in a full game because, unfortunately, Cavan were unable to attend. Dermot Cleary and Seamus McCusker, assisted by Fabian Burns, invited the following players to this Blitz at Lissan:                                                                                                                                                      Michael Williamson, Eoin Cleary, Conor Goodwin, Aaron Maguire, Aaron Kinney, Paul Mc Elroy, Darragh Mc Gurn, Ronan Markey, Conor Durnien, David Teague,  Barry Duffy, John Finbarr Killen, Tarlach Russell,  Diarmaid Russell, Jack Gavin, Conor McShea, Stephen Breen, Michael Donaghy. Patrick Hyde attended but did not take part as he was injured.                                                                                                                         Fermanagh won the game on a scoreline of Fermanagh 4-12 to Monaghan’s 1-9 but this score didn’t reflect a very tight and keenly contested match between the two teams. This game allowed the mentors of each county to get a look at their players and set their agenda for the Ulster U16 Hurling Competition on Saturday 4th August and the National U15 and U16 Blitzes on Saturday 1st September. Please also note the Ulster U14 Hurling Blitz will be on Saturday 11th August with the National U14 Blitz on Saturday 1st September also. The coaches now select players to attend the trials for the Elite Camp in UUJ on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd July 2012. These trials are on Saturday 26th May 2012 at MUSA, Cookstown and are only open to players born in 1996.

Croke Park “Activity Day” Wednesday 11th April 2012.

It has been agreed that the Croke Park Activity Day will take place this year during the week after Easter on Wednesday 11th April 2012. Suggestions – Hurling & Football clubs.

Academies / Schools of Excellence / Development Squads 2012

The way forward for Development Squads in Football and Hurling was discussed at a recent Coaching & Games Committee meeting, chaired by Deirdre Donnelly and attended by Ferghal O’Connor, Benny McManus, Brian Treacy, Ciaran Carey and myself – Anita Rasdale could not attend.

It was strongly recommended that there should be a change towards working with the top 25 players in each age-group, players leaving P. 7/U12 through U13, U14, U15 and U16. The U17 Squad would be integrated with the County Minors.

The door would never be closed to players who developed late. This would involve a number of changes – not all possible in one year.

A group of players leaving Primary School would be identified by Primary School teachers, the County Coaches and club mentors. Despite the difference in the School year and the U12 Club year these players would form the basis of the next year’s U13 School of Excellence. They would then progress the following year, as a group, to the U14 School of Excellence, the following year to the U15 Development and ultimately, as basically the same group, to the U16 Development Squad.

This would mean eventually not running the U13 & U14 Development Camps but working with the selected players instead.

In 2012 the proposal would be:

  • to identify a group of 25 players who have just finished Primary School,
  • to hold an U13 Development Camp in Lissan 9th July to 11th July and select 25 players from this Camp,
  • to invite a group of selected U14s – from last year’s U13 Camp and the U14 FL, Feiles and U14 FC – to these 3 days at Lissan and work with them as a group to prepare for games,
  • to select only one panel of 25 players for the Ulster U15 Blitzes and work with them in March and April,
  • to select a group of 25 players from last year’s U15 Squad to work as our U16 Squad in 2012,
  • that the U17 football squad would compete in Ulster Council Blitzes with the Co. Minor manager, Simon Bradley.

This approach is intended to lead to a more focussed use of our resources and a more integrated approach to such topics as Attitude, Commitment, Skills, Strength & Conditioning, Fitness Testing, Nutrition, Mental Preparation etc

GoGames

Half-time in NFL games

Three home games left in NFL – V Wicklow on 11th March, V Limerick on 1st April & V Leitrim on 15th April. The Primary Schools will use one of these (possibly 1st April) but the other two dates are available to interested clubs.

Let me know if your club would be interested in bringing 10-12 U10 players to either of these games.
