Feile Fermanagh Under-14 ‘Cup’ Competition
Kinawley proved to be victorious after an eventful weekend of Gaelic football that seen teams crowned as Feile champions in Cup, Plate and Shield competitions.
After a number of group games played throughout the County on Saturday it was Kinawley, Newtownbutler, Derrygonnelly and St Patricks Donagh who qualified for the main Cup competition that was to be held in Derrygonnelly Harps, Canon Maguire Park venue on Sunday past.
Kinawley were to defeat Derrygonnelly in the opening Semi Final, 4-8 to 3-3.
Kinawley held the better sway of things in the first half and led, 3-2 to 0-3. Derrygonnelly did hit three goals of their own in the second half but it wasn’t enough.
In the other Semi Final, Newtownbutler defeated neighbours St Patricks Donagh, 3-4 to 0-6. Newtownbutler led 1-3 to 0-1 at half time and although St Patricks started the second half much better it was Newtownbutler who saw out the game with two fine goals.
In the Final Kinawley proved to be victorious winning an extremely tight contest, 3-7 to 2-9 against a determined Newtownbutler side.
Kinawley decided to play with the wind in the first half after winning the toss, but it was Newtownbutler who would move into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead. Kinawley came back into the game and with 12 minutes played in the first half it was Newtownbutler who led 0-5 to 0-3.
Right on the stroke of half time Kinawley would move in for a decisive goal to give them the first half lead, 1-3 to 0-5.
Kinawley showed great work rate early on and raced clear by nine points but with just 6 minutes remaining Newtownbutler would move in for a late 2-2 in the space of just 4 minutes to leave just one between them.
Newtownbutler had chances late on to equalise but both shots went agonisingly wide.
However, Kinawley were able to hold on and will now represent Fermanagh in the Feile competition on June 29th to July 1st in Down, Louth and Meath.
