Pascal Canavan’s St Patrick’s side remain unbeaten after four games played and top the table, ahead of Enniskillen Gaels. The Donagh men had to work hard for their win on Sunday afternoon after Belnaleck pushed them close in the second half. A goal from Shane McDermott midway through the second half sealed the victory for the home side and ended the Art McMurrough’s challenge though.
St Pat’s opened the scoring with points from Gary Maguire and Michael Montgomery before Christopher Owens pulled one back for Belnaleck.
The teams traded scores as the half wore on, Jason and Pat Cadden both registering points for the home side with Ciaran McBrien and Dermott Lewsley on target for Belnaleck. Michael McGrade concluded the first half scoring with a point to give his side a 0-05 to 0-03 lead.
In the second half, St Pat’s enjoyed the upperhand to begin with.
Three unanswered points from Michael McGrade as well as Jason and Pat Cadden gave them a five point lead. Belnaleck began to get into the game at this point and reduced the deficit through Ciaran McBrien (1 free, 1 play), Lee Cullen and Dermott Lewsley.
With only a point between the sides and the game hanging in the balance Shane McDermott got on the end of a loose ball played into the goal mouth and poked it to the net, past Ryan McNulty to stave off the Belnaleck threat.
Michael Montgomery finished the scoring for St Pat’s as they continued their winning streak.
Belanaleck will rue their missed opportunity in front of goal late on when their shot came back off the post and the chance went a begging but they will take encouragement from their performance against the league leaders.
