Kinawley Brian Boru’s club man Raurai McDermott helped his Ulster side to a win on Saturday past in Andersonstown Leisure Centre in the Wheelchair Indoor All-Ireland hurling league.
The 19 year old South West College student seen his Ulster side top the group after games with Connacht, Munster and Leinster to forge ahead in the indoor hurling league series.
The Ulster province who won the 2015 competition in Blanchardstown in December were once again the team to beat on Saturday past.
McDermott said, “I suppose coming into the competition we didn’t really know what to expect, from the outset we targeted 3 wins but we knew it wouldn’t be easy as the other provinces would be out to get revenge on us from last year.”
He continued, “In our first game we played Munster and we came from behind to go 4-3 up but they got a last minute goal to draw 4-4. Our second game we deservedly defeated Connacht 4-1, while after lunch we had our toughest game against Leinster as they had hugely strengthened with new players since last year. Leinster went ahead early on but thankfully our team trusted each other and we went onto win the game 3-2 with a fantastic performance from everyone.
Each province gets to hold the competition and up next is Cork on April 9th, with Dundalk IT on June 25th and Roscommon on August 27th will be later on.
McDermott travels to Craigavon, Armagh for training every month and is really enjoying the competitive nature of the competition, “Its a fantastic feeling to be part of the Ulster setup and with all the players competing for a starting place it adds to the pressure. The speed and skill is great from players and its even better when you’re winning.”
The Ulster squad consists of Raurai McDermott along with 4 players from Derry, 3 from Antrim and Tyrone, while 1 from Down and Armagh.
