Night 2 of our ‘Up and Coming’ Fermanagh GAA players.
Jonny Owens is a talented Belnaleck forward and is now delivering on the senior stage for his club. He has shown excellent class and composure this season for a scoring forward and on current form will be knocking on the Fermanagh door very soon.
Name: Jonny Owens
Age: 18
Club: Belnaleck
Position: Corner/wing half forward
Favourite Pitch: Brewster Park, Enniskillen
Best player played with: Matthew McAloon of Belcoo and St Michaels Enniskillen, no defender can get near him when he sticks that big arse of his out!
Best Player I’ve played against: Oliver Harte is definitely up there but probably Eoin Donnelly!
Best Game I’ve been involved in: Belnaleck v Teemore in the Minor B championship Semi final. The game ended in a draw after extra time and we went on to win the replay!
Best Trainer in the club: Mark McKenzie
Worst training drill: There are many to choose from but I would say the pressure square.
Favourite Fermanagh player: Tomás Corrigan and Ché Cullen are up there but the great Connor McAuley just edges it for me
Favourite TV programme: Tough one but not many come close to
Father Ted. Never fails to get a laugh
Best advice received: Take your points and the goals will come!
Biggest influence on club career: Despite his constant smart arse chat, Kevin McGuinness. A tactical genius
Club volunteer of note: Malachy McConnell
Biggest Strength in my game: Not based on my recent performances anyway but I would say kicking points
Club I like to see do well apart from my own: Coa
Best thing about the GAA: It’s something to chat everyone about after mass
If you could change 1 thing about the GAA: Establish a rule to eliminate the blanket defence and sweepers
